This Fall-Themed Handbuilding class will teach students slab rolling, coil building, and attaching techniques. We will also learn how to apply underglaze and glaze using brushing techniques. The theme is broad, but some ideas of fall-themed pieces are candle holders, leaf-shaped spoon holders, and functional pieces like cups, mugs, plates and planters. The fall theme can be interpreted in any way students like; it can simply influence the colors students choose to use or students can go all out with a fall theme.

What you’ll Learn: This class will teach students how to make clay slabs using the slab roller or rolling pins, how to make clay coils, and how to build forms using slab or coil, and slipping and scoring methods. Students will also learn and practice kurinuki (or carving) techniques to build or alter forms, as well as glazing techniques including using and applying underglaze and glaze using brushing techniques. Feel free to bring any kind of fall inspiration to help you think of forms or colors to use for your pieces.

  • planter, bowl, candle holder, vase, plate, bowl, wall hanging, spoon rest, sponge holder, soap dish, tiles

  • Make test tiles for glaze if desired
