Class Descriptions for 2025:
Four Week Ceramics Class, Hand-built lanterns, Thursdays in September
September 2025: Hand-built Lanterns with Jill Kuanfung.
Participants will learn different hand-building techniques to create hand-built lanterns. They’ll have the option of making a prismatic form or a circular form (or both!). We’ll explore how to use carving and texture to elevate the surface of our pieces, and after our work is fired, we’ll use battery-powered LED lights to make our lanterns glow! What you’ll learn: How to slab build and coil build , how to slip and score to attach pieces of clay together, how to use texture to elevate a surface, how to use negative space to elevate a surface and contribute to function and form of a piece, how to store a piece while in process, how to decorate a surface using glazes and underglazes, how to use a slab roller
Four week ceramics class, hand-built autumn, Thursdays in October
October 2025: Fall-Themed Handbuilding with Ani Kramer
This Fall-Themed Handbuilding class will teach students slab rolling, coil building, and attaching techniques. We will also learn how to apply underglaze and glaze using brushing techniques. The theme is broad, but some ideas of fall-themed pieces are candle holders, pumpkins/ jack-o-lanterns, leaf-shaped spoon holders, miniature fall scenes, and functional pieces like cups, mugs, plates and planters. The fall theme can be interpreted in any way students like; it can simply influence the colors students choose to use or students can go all out with a fall theme. What you’ll Learn: This class will teach students how to make clay slabs using the slab roller or rolling pins, how to make clay coils, and how to build forms using slab or coil, and slipping and scoring methods. Students will also learn how to use underglaze, and how to apply underglaze and glaze using brushing techniques. Feel free to bring any kind of fall inspiration to help you think of forms or colors to use for your pieces.
We are always looking for instructors!
